I was sitting in downtown Chicago when I got the call – a farmer outside the western suburbs needed help. I jumped in my car and headed west on I-90. Near Schaumburg, a Lamborghini flew past me like I was standing still.

I sped up just to catch a glance. Had to be someone important. Rich, famous, powerful. The kind of person who turns heads. The car was stunning. It was sleek, loud, impossible to ignore. I couldn’t help but think: it probably costs more than my house, gets driven five times a year, and costs a fortune just to maintain.

An hour later, I was deep in farm country, and came before a combine slowly making its way down the road with a long line of cars behind it. My first thought? “God, I’m glad I’m not behind that.” Then it hit me.

A combine costs twice as much as a Lamborghini. It’s just as seasonal. It’s as costly to maintain. But no one pulls out their phone to snap a photo of the guy driving the combine. That’s the strange thing about agriculture – no one but the farmer sees the capital expense. The dollars sunk into equipment, the risk sitting in the shed, and the complexity it takes just to break even.

That’s why autonomy matters. Not because it’s flashy, but because it’s going to shrink the capital burden that no one sees. If we can do the same job with smaller machines, fewer operators, and less financial risk, the next generation won’t need to choose between farming the land and affording the iron. Prepare to be boarded.
