Once Upon a Time. . .

Once Upon a Time. . .

Craig Rupp, Sabanto Founder & CEO“Back in my day, we wore an onion on our belt, which was the style at the time….” This was a line I will never forget from The Simpsons, where Abraham, Homer’s dad, launches into one of his famously long, rambling stories. It’s hilarious. It’s classic. And every time I think of it, I’m reminded of my grandfather, my uncles, and my dad. Meanwhile, with each passing day, I find myself falling in line. I am even reminded of it.

OK, I admit it. I tell a lot of stories. I vehemently deny it has anything to do with my age. I spend a lot of time on the phone talking with employees, board members, investors, partners, etc. In my defense, I’m always asked, “What’s new?” “How’s it going?” What’s happening is this: I have a front row seat to a tectonic shift in agriculture, and sometimes, the best easy way to explain it isn’t with a chart or in a PowerPoint deck.

Just a second ago, we had a user with a system parked out in the distance. The ground was wet, and he didn’t want to slog through the mud or dirty his freshly washed pickup. With a quick call to our support team, we helped him trigger a field-to-field transition remotely. That system started moving on its own, into the next field, in the right direction, without a drop of sweat. All this happened 1,000 miles away.

I’m sorry, but I cannot stop telling stories like this. Because when history looks back on how autonomy took hold in agriculture, it won’t start with specs and part numbers. It’ll start with a bunch of stories like this, stitched together one story at a time. And just like that onion on a belt, it’ll all seem a little silly and completely normal.
